Time to say goodbye Geneva 2012

My camera's memory card is fully loaded, the battery's empty and I'm on my way back home.

I'd like to say thanks to the entire Opel Team for the friendly welcome, their hospitality and especially the great conversations I had with everyone. It was a pleasure!

Now if you ask me about my personal highlight at the Opel booth here at the 2012 Geneva Motor Show, there's just one answer: OPC, OPC, OPC!

Opel and social media in Geneva

Here's a small peek behind the curtains again. The social media team of Opel is always really close to everything that's happening here in Geneva. Dietmar Thate for example usually works in Rüsselsheim, the home of Opel. From there he coordinates social media topics which are then spread across the various channels. He also writes for different Opel blogs.

Of course he was on location here in Geneva, and was able to feed his channels with live-material. I was allowed to sit in the specially furnished social media office - most likely the only blogger here at the motor show, who received such a special treat.

From there we had a stable connection to the web. We could post on our blogs and social media channels, the live-stream of the Opel press conference was also hosted from this room.

A souvenir from Geneva...

I spoke with Chief Designer Advanced Design Richard Shaw in Geneva. You can read the interview with him over on our Ampera Blog.

Right here I'd just like to show you a very personal souvenir from Geneva. It'll soon be framed and will receive a special place in my office.

Any questions? Ask Siri! How awesome is that - Opel goes iPhone!

This is a teaser about what Opel has got in the works: In the near future, there will be an OPC-app for the iPhone. It gets better. Via a CAN-Bus adapter it'll be possible to get loads of information onto your iPhone.

This means Opel is opening up towards the iPhone, even if only in one direction. Which is ok, since there are electronic gas pedals in our cars and we'd hate it if one were able to control these devices with an iPhone. The new app is scheduled for next year and I'm already very curious which features it'll come with.

Opel being up to date can be seen on this picture as well:

Siri, Siri, Siri…but fear not. This cardboard hostess was there for just a brief time to pose for photos at the Opel booth. All real life host and hostesses were present as well and will be until the show closes its gates.

Opel Corsa D OPC Nürburgring Edition

I've already hinted that I'll show you more of one of the Opel models that's been added to the showcase here in Geneva: The Opel Corsa D OPC Nürburgring Edition.

Here are some pictures for you:

(download)

There are no OPC editions currently planned for the new Zafira or the new Meriva. At least that's what I could read between the lines during discussions here in Geneva. But I guess, one should never say never….

At night when everyone is asleep…

20120308-062721

Since I have an employee's pass, I get to enter Geneva's pavilions at 5 a.m. in the morning. I wanted to share these exclusive impressions with you:

At night when everyone is asleep, the cars are sleeping too. The headlights are turned off and they're just waiting for the visitors who'll flood the pavilions during the day.

Some automakers cover their cars during the night. At the Opel booth one vehicle receives this kind of attention - the Opel RAKe.

Most booths were remodeled after the press days. The same thing was done at the Opel booth, and some cars were added to the line-up. I'll tell you more about one of these cars in my next entry….

The Astra OPC will be available in "Arden Blue"!

20120307-174346

I got this information from Volker Strycek at the Opel booth in Geneva. The typical "OPC red" will be available for the new Astra OPC as well. Apart from these news I had a very interesting conversation with him, which I'll write about it in the next few days.

Volker Strycek is the head of the Opel Performance Center and he told me more about the technical differences between the Astra GTC and the Astra OPC. This was extremely interesting, but…I'll keep you posted.

The Ampera at the Green Pavillion

20120307-123308

The Ampera can also be seen at the Green Pavillion in Geneva. And it's not alone. Opel employees are there to answer your questions, they're also responsible for planning the test drives which can be taken with the Ampera here in Geneva.

This means, you're not restricted to just looking at the winner of the "Car of the Year Award 2012". You can actually test drive it too!

I'd like to give you a small piece of advice though before you take the Ampera for a test drive: Check your speedometer and watch your speed. Especially in the beginning this is important, because the Ampera is practically soundless when you drive it.
